Mulberry Wastewater Treatment Plant
Mulberry, FloridaProject Description/Services
Madrid Engineering Group, Inc. served as the geotechnical sub-consultant to the general civil engineer (PBS&J) for an analysis of a leaking former settling pond that is no longer in use at the Mulberry waste water treatment plant. One of the ponds formerly used for settling of processed waste water prior to the construction of the new waste water treatment plant to the southwest was found to be seeping water through its southern dike close to a nearby wetland. Contamination of the wetland was a reason for concern so MEG was tasked with evaluating the dikes around the pond.
A series of SPT borings and permeability tests were completed through the dike and in the surrounding areas to construct a soils profile of the pond walls and bottom. A flow net analysis and water balance was performed to estimate the amount of water leaking through and under the dike toward the wetland area.
MEG made recommendations for stabilizing the dike wall and cutting off water flow through and under the dike wall in order to minimize the potential for contamination of the nearby wetland areas.
